Minding Our Business

Program in Entrepreneurship

Mindng Our Business - M.O.B. is a community outreach program of Rider University College of Business Administration. The purpose of Minding Our Business is to advance the personal and vocational development of Trenton youth through entrepreneurship education and mentoring.

Minding Our Business operates three programs: the Service Learning program, the Summer Program, and the Advanced Program. Since 1997, MOB has trained and mentored more than 1300 Trenton middle school students, ages 11-14, in starting and running their own businesses. The skills needed to run a business successfully are also important life skills.

Impact on Trenton Youth
In its 12 year history, MOB programs have been successful in advancing the personal and vocational development of Trenton youth. Our research indicates that students in all MOB programs become more interested in going to college and in starting their own businesses. Students participating in MOB observe positive changes in self and improvement in important work/life skills. Research on academic records data indicates that MOB participation reduces school absenteeism and tardiness. MOB also improves self esteem among participating students.  This is what students have to say about their experiences in MOB: “My life dream is to own a business. MOB made me more confident about achieving my dream.” “MOB didn’t just keep me out of trouble during the summer, I learned a great deal and my desire to have a business keeps growing.”

CONTROVERSY RANKS #1

controversy - a contentious speech act; a dispute where there is strong disagreement; "they were involved in a violent argument"

Todays news and local press make a living off of controversy. We as people will agree to disagree but thats life. Todays environment is feuled by heated controversy - I'm pretty sure alot of you remember the Jerry Springer Show, or will pick up the local paper, you know which one I'm talking about , yes I pull no punches - the Trentonian. To read the so called issues that take place within the community. But if I remember correctly our communtiy is based on more than the junk food being displayed to the public in the local paper in the form of what they call news. The glorification of violence within the community is not our only major issue. There is  education, unemployment, the lack of recreation for todays children that are the future. $0.50 a day for a grocery store enquirer starts to add up in the economic sense of mathematics. If a large portion of the city gets the paper on a daily basis, how much do we contribute to this? 20,000 people obtaining 20,000 papers x $0.50 = $10,000 a day Mon - Sat. is a total of $60,000, 20,000 x $1.50 for the Sunday paper = $30,000 so a sum total of the week would amount to $90,000. All is fair in love and war, so they give the people what they want. I guess it doesn't have to make sense if it makes dollars.

TRENTON PEACEKEEPERS

What is the PeaceKeepers?

It is a Community Action Plan designed to help keep the peace in a community that is plagued by crime and gun violence by recruiting, training and organizing men to protect, respect and control their communities. The PeaceKeepers believe if we can get back control of our communities we do not have to patrol our communities. We believe meeting our youth where they are, on the corners and in the projects. We believe the men of the PeaceKeeprs will establish "New Norms". Which are established rules of conduct and behavior by which our young people can govern thier lives by. Thus shifting the paradigm of thought in our communities to the reality that we can change our neighborhoods.

PeaceKeepers Mission

The PeaceKeepers mission is to get men to accept their responsibility to protect the women, the children and the seniors in their community; not to act as police. We believe with the principal of love and kindness we will draw our trouble youth to a better way of life. Similar to the Principal of "ahimsa" (non-injury to human beings). Our mission is not to condemn our youth or judge their behavior. A wise man once said, "You don't have to condemn a dirty glass just set a clean glass beside it". That's is what we represent; that "Clean Glass" or being that example for them.

SOUL TRAIN HAS NEW BLOOD - A. MADDOX (TRENTON NATIVE)

The American iconic TV program Soul Train, which ceased production in 2006 has been sold to L.A. based Mad Vision Entertainment and the private equity firm Intermedia Partners. This is a hell of a deal in my mind, as there is a tremendous opportunity to resuscitate the legendary Soul Train franchise which includes the longest running Black program in America, along with the Lady of Soul Awards, and the Soul Train Music Awards.

To provide a little more background, Soul Train is recognized as the first black music variety show ever offered on American television, as well as one of the longest running syndicated programs in American television history! The show was created in Chicago in 1969 by the former radio broadcaster turned entertainment industry giant – Mr. Don Cornelius.

On the subject of the deal, Cornelius has been quoted in a Reuters piece as saying “…I feel the time is now finally right to pass the torch. The MadVision team understands and respects my vision.” The respect comes in the form of rights to the brand, to produce the show, and to a catalog of nearly 1,100 hours of historical show footage.

Madvision, led by Peter Griffith, Kenard Gibbs, and Anthony Maddox are the potential architects of what could be a serious revival of a long standing part of American Pop culture. Is their really gold in the long tail of Soul Train reruns? And what will become of the other franchise jewels – The Soul Train Music and Lady of Soul Awards?

From a web and digital media perspective, this should translate to video on demand, broadband distribution opportunities, and DVD box sets to put under your Christmas tree, but where are the Black oriented broadband video platforms? BlackVoices, BlackPlanet, BlackAmericaWeb, and TheRoot have limited video, while RushmoreDrive provides video as a type of search result. Bottomline, none of the major Black web outlets are robust video plays. Cable and satellite will be great opportunities for On Demand, and maybe even TV One or Africa Channel might be great syndication partners, but where is the real gold mine for the future of Soul Train? My bet would be on DVD and perhaps mobile On Demand. Wouldn’t you want to play over and over again on your iPhone those classic Jackson 5 appearances when Michael Jackson was actually a little Black boy? Here is wishing Intermedia Partners and Mad Vision Entertainment much love, peace and soul!

VETERANS AND POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition that follows a terrifying event. Often, people with PTSD have persistent frightening thoughts and memories of their ordeal and feel emotionally numb, especially with people they were once close to. PTSD, once referred to as shell shock or battle fatigue, was first brought to public attention by war veterans, but it can result from any number of traumatic incidents. These include kidnapping, serious accidents such as car or train wrecks, natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes, violent attacks such as a mugging, rape, or torture, or being held captive. The event that triggers it may be something that threatened the person's life or the life of someone close to him or her. Or it could be something witnessed, such as mass destruction after a plane crash.

Whatever the source of the problem, some people with PTSD repeatedly relive the trauma in the form of nightmares and disturbing recollections during the day. They may also experience sleep problems, depression, feeling detached or numb, or being easily startled. They may lose interest in things they used to enjoy and have trouble feeling affectionate. They may feel irritable, more aggressive than before, or even violent. Seeing things that remind them of the incident may be very distressing, which could lead them to avoid certain places or situations that bring back those memories. Anniversaries of the event are often very difficult.

PTSD can occur at any age, including childhood. The disorder can be accompanied by depression, substance abuse, or anxiety. Symptoms may be mild or severe—people may become easily irritated or have violent outbursts. In severe cases they may have trouble working or socializing. In general, the symptoms seem to be worse if the event that triggered them was initiated by a person—such as a rape, as opposed to a flood.

Ordinary events can serve as reminders of the trauma and trigger flashbacks or intrusive images. A flashback may make the person lose touch with reality and reenact the event for a period of seconds or hours or, very rarely, days. A person having a flashback, which can come in the form of images, sounds, smells, or feelings, usually believes that the traumatic event is happening all over again.

Not every traumatized person gets full-blown PTSD, or experiences PTSD at all. PTSD is diagnosed only if the symptoms last more than a month. In those who do have PTSD, symptoms usually begin within 3 months of the trauma, and the course of the illness varies. Some people recover within 6 months, others have symptoms that last much longer. In some cases, the condition may be chronic. Occasionally, the illness doesn't show up until years after the traumatic event.

Quick Facts

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an extremely debilitating condition that can occur after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm was threatened or occurred. Traumatic events that can trigger PTSD include violent personal assaults such as rape or mugging, natural or manmade disasters, car accidents, or military combat.

Most people with PTSD try to avoid any reminders or thoughts of the ordeal. Despite this avoidant behavior, many people with PTSD repeatedly re-experience the ordeal in the form of flashback episodes, memories, nightmares, or frightening thoughts, especially when they are exposed to events or objects reminiscent of the trauma. Symptoms of PTSD also include emotional numbness and sleep disturbances (including insomnia), depression, and irritability or outbursts of anger. Feelings of intense guilt are also common. PTSD is diagnosed only if these symptoms last more than one month.

Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), effective treatments have been developed to help people with PTSD.

HOW SCARE TACTICS ARE USED AGAINST YOU

When it comes to motivating the masses to take action, sometimes straight facts aren't enough. People who hear a frightening statistic or an alarming fact often take that information at face value and act out of fear. This is the purpose of using "scare tactics," manipulative words or actions which create a sense of fear or shock in the recipients. These fears, rational or irrational as they may be, are often enough to force people into making uninformed decisions or taking rash actions. Scare tactics such as pointing out the worst case scenario or associating the issue with a much greater threat are commonly used by leaders to gain popular support for military actions or other controversial decisions.

Scare tactics do not have to reach the level of verbal or physical TERRORISM in order to be effective, however. Sometimes the mere mention of a disastrous alternative may be enough to manipulate others into a certain way of thinking. Successful scare tactics must instill a true sense of fear or else they may be seen as weak attempts to sway public opinion. This is why many verbal scare tactics are often backed up by more tangible ones, such as grisly photographs, personal testimonies and displays of force (sound familiar).

Scare tactics are commonplace in world politics, since it is generally difficult for one dictator to keep dissidents under control without the threat of violence, real or perceived. As long as the population believes scare tactics such as secret police squads, shutdowns of free presses, political arrests and summary executions are real, organized rebellions become a rarity. The key word in "scare tactics" is "scare." It doesn't matter if most of the stories of political reprisals are apocryphal or mere rumors, as long as the scare tactics instill a real sense of fear in the populace.

"Most" scare tactics are not meant to cause widespread harm or damage, but to play on the recipient's innate sense of security. Many professional athletes use scare tactics to keep their opponents off-balance, such as a pitcher intentionally throwing a ball close to the batter or a race car driver tapping another car for intimidation purposes. Scare tactics often keep an opponent from becoming too comfortable or too confident. While the use of most scare tactics is seen as unfair or unethical, the advantage they can provide can be significant. Many scare tactics are designed to stay within the bounds of the law, but still inflict maximum psychological pressure on the intended audience(the masses), unless deemed necessary through a higher authority!

                            DO YOU REMEMBER THIS ?

HOW TO KEEP YOUR COOL DURING THE SUMMER TIME

These Will Help You Keep Your Cool

Warm weather allows everyone to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. However, not many people remember to protect themselves from warm weather dangers. Heat waves are dangerous for everyone but especially the elderly and children. Some of us do not have the luxury of going home to an air conditioned home. Keeping your home cool during these extreme weather conditions are not only important for your comfort but for you health as well. Use these tips to keep your family cool during extreme heat conditions.

Fans- Use box fans in a window with the air intake pulling air to the outside. During the evening you should reverse the fan to pull cool evening air into the house. Ceiling fans should be used to circulate air from opened windows. If you have a box fan you can create a little homemade air conditioning. Set the tub of ice water behind the fan and wait. The cool air will be pulled away from the tub and cool down your home.

Windows- Windows and blinds should be closed while the sun is up. Keeping windows and doors closed up will allow the house to stay as cool as possible for the longest amount of time.

Head downstairs- Stay downstairs can also keep your cooler. Heat rises so the upper floors of your household so staying downstairs makes a big difference. If you have a basement you should consider taking breaks during the daytime to get a break from the heat.

Water and Ice- Water is a great way to cool off. Take a cool bath or shower during the day. You can also soak your feet in an ice bath to cool down. Get a spray bottle that is filled with cold water and spray bursts on your face and neck throughout the day.

Lights out- Keeping unnecessary lights on in your home can actually raise the temperature of your indoor air. Also avoid using ovens and stoves during the day which can also up the heat factor during a heat wave.

Go out- On the days that are the hottest you should take advantage of your local businesses that have air conditioning.

Also keep in mind that pets are affected by heat. Make sure that you keep there safety and comfort in mind. Avoid eating large meals since they will make your metabolism increase which will raise your body temperature.

Dehydration and death are just a few of the illnesses that can occur from not taking necessary precautions during a hear wave. Make sure to check on elderly neighbors and relatives during heat waves also. The elderly are especially susceptible to heat wave related illnesses. Keep yourself cool this summer and have fun in the sun but do it safely.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF A BUYER'S MARKET

A buyer's market refers to conditions in the sales of any type of product, where supply significantly exceeds demand. If you have a great supply of an item, the result is usually to lower prices for the consumer, or “buyer.” This can be wonderful for the consumer, but not so terrific for anyone trying to sell something when supply is high. A buyer's market is as poor for the seller as it is good for the buyer.

You will see the term used in reference to real estate. In fact, this is frequently what buyer's market means. Essentially, within an area, homes for sale greatly exceed the number of people who wish to buy a home. Home values drop and many properties remain on the market for months since the buyer has considerable discretion in being able to choose a home at the best value.

Sometimes, a boom in construction can create a market for buyers, especially if real estate developers have overestimated the amount of people who want to buy new homes. If building large real estate developments is coupled with falling employment rates, the real estate market may be perfect for those who do have stable jobs and can afford to buy a home.

Falling employment rates, or refinancing during a seller’s market, when demand exceeds supply, can create problems for homeowners. Inability to pay your mortgage may necessitate selling your home, and often some sellers are in a hurry to sell their homes before home values drop more, or before banks foreclose on their loans. They are most likely to take a lower price than the list price for their homes if they absolutely must sell in a hurry.

The buyer's market can create something of a panic for people who have purchased real estate for investment. When home purchase prices go down, more houses may emerge on the market to be sold quickly before prices drop lower. Usually this panic only enhances the buyer's market, because there are even more homes available, and more room to bargain for a desired price.

Both buyer’s and seller’s markets can create distress, in the former case for the seller, and in the latter for the buyer. Trends tend to reverse and change, suggesting that if you can hold onto your home through a buyer's market, it’s likely the prices will once again change to your advantage perhaps even with a few months.

Along with lower prices and lower demand, the buyer's market affects interest rates. When people aren’t buying homes, banks aren’t making money off new loans and the people paying interest on those loans. Interest rates on loans tend to drop, and buyers can take advantage of this because it tends to spark a high degree of competition in the banking world to offer people the best deals on loans. Further, during a buyer's market, banks are more likely to consider lending to people with less than perfect credit.

TEENAGE GIRL STRUCK BY POLICE OFFICER WITH A CLOSED FIST

YouTube-Video

Walsh is to be transferred to the police department's training section to "review the tactics that he has been taught" while investigations continue, police said.

The incident comes in the wake of recent allegations of brutality by Seattle officers, including the assault of an unarmed man on the ground and a teenage girl's assault in a cell - both captured on video.

Officials of two pressure groups who oppose police profiling of African-Americans convened a news conference to protest the officer's actions, even if they were a tactic taught in police training.

"That appears to be an overreaction to what appears to be a non-violent jaywalking situation," said James Kelly, president and CEO of the Urban League of Seattle.

"Unfortunately this seems to become too far and too often of the typical police response.

"The provocation of the 17-year-old may have presented a confrontation situation but the violence in the form of a full-blown fist to the face was wrong."

Island/Def Jam Records has fired up the marketing machine and put 21-year-old Dondria Nicole aka Phatfffat, on the front burner.

SOLAR POWER IN MERCER COUNTY

The state Board of Public Utilities approved a $515 million plan for Public Service Electric & Gas to install thousands of miniature solar power generators on utility poles and rooftops throughout the state.

The program is part of a PSE&G plan to increase the state's solar energy generation an additional 80 megawatts by 2013 -- or enough energy to power 64,000 homes. Of the $515 million, $200 million was awarded to Petra Solar, the South Plainfield company chosen to install the units.

The program -- which PSE&G said will make New Jersey second in the nation in solar power generation behind California -- will cost the utility's customers about $1.28 annually for the first year, rising to about $4.08 a year in 2028. Of the 80 megawatts, about half will come from pole-mounted panels that will feed electricity directly into the grid, with the other half coming from equally small roof-top units.

The pole-mounted devices, which cost about $1,000 apiece, are expected to help augment the power supply during peak periods when demand from customers spikes. Currently, utilities have to use special power plants that are expensive to run during peak periods.

TIPS ON HOW TO RESTORE YOUR CREDIT

During some financial crisis, your credit rating may have been damaged because you missed payments altogether or you were late in making payments. While you can’t repair your credit overnight—and be wary of companies that make such promises—there are definite steps you can take to get back to financial health.

  1. Stop adding new credit-card debt. Continue to pay off your credit cards but stop using them. Instead, use cash, checks, or a debit card, which automatically deducts the amount from your checking account.

  2. List your credit-card debt: the cards you have, the balances on each, and the interest rate on each card. The Debt Payoff Worksheet can help. Start paying off the card with the highest interest rate first, as you continue to make monthly payments on the other cards. When you’ve paid off that first card, apply the payments to the card with the second-highest interest rate and continue paying off your cards until you have paid off all your debt.

  3. Review your credit reports. You can order a free credit report each year from the three main reporting agencies (Experian, TransUnion, Equifax) through www.AnnualCreditReport.com. Examine the reports and alert the agencies if you find errors. Follow the agency’s instructions to clear up mistakes and be patient. It can take a little while, but clearing up your credit reports is very important.

  4. Pay your bills on time. It’s simple, but it’s one of the best ways to improve your credit rating.

The so-called “teacher beating” caught on tape by a cell phone shows an incident where a teacher beats a student. In the video, the teacher beating shows a young adolescent being backed into a corner, then hit, slapped and kicked by an adult woman. The teacher is allegedly Sherri Davis, a science teacher at a Houston charter school. The entire teacher beating caught on tape started, apparently, because the 13-year old boy had teased another student. While students in the classroom admit that Isaiah Johnson was misbehaving, there is no justification for a teacher beating up a student.

TAX INCREASE FOR TRENTON, NJ HOMEOWNERS

TRENTON -- The state will hike the tax rate on city homeowners 22 percent after the City Council yesterday failed for a third time to finalize a budget and set the tax rate itself.

"We intend to set the City of Trenton's property tax levy today so that May tax bills can be sent out," Department of Community Affairs spokeswoman Lisa Ryan wrote in an e-mail yesterday.

Council members Annette Lartigue, Gino Melone, George Muschal and Manuel Segura voted down a budget amendment that would have allowed the tax rate to be set. Council President Paul Pintella and Councilwoman Cordelia Staton voted for the measure.

Mayor Douglas Palmer had repeatedly asked them to approve a 59 cent increase, but the majority voted the amendments down three times in three weeks, largely because of the impact on tax bills.

The increase boosts the total tax rate to $3.33 per $100 of value, amounting to $3,330 on a home assessed at $100,000. Of the increase, $490 would be due in May.

Lartigue blamed Pintella for not scheduling budget hearings earlier in the year to find savings that could reduce the increase. She also accused the outgoing Palmer administration of not consulting with council and not preparing for a worse budget year next year.

"They have not been fair and transparent with this budget," she said. "This administration's foot will be on the other side of the door when the walls come crashing in."

Palmer rejected the transparency charge, saying the administration had given Lartigue budget information in the fall and the council had a budget committee last year that could have proposed changes. Lartigue, however, said the committee had never met.

The mayor also said the council's rejection of the tax increase had threatened to cause greater problems by delaying a delinquent tax lien sale, which will provide $11 million in revenue and is needed to prevent a much larger increase.

"If they think this is difficult to do -- the people who want to be mayor -- then what's going to happen if we don't get $42 million?" Palmer said, referring to a proposed state aid cut.

"This budget will pale in comparison to the decisions that have to be made in next year's budget."

Lartigue, Pintella and Segura are among the 10 candidates running to succeed Palmer.

With the tax levy now set, the council has 45 days to formally adopt the budget. If it does not do so by the deadline, the DCA will fine the opposing council members $25 a day, retroactive to April 16, Ryan said.

Why companies are buying your unused gold and jewelry?

After the sub-prime catastrophe in banking and realty sector, which led to the global recession in 2008-09, it is the turn of bullion markets now.

‘FRAUD’, that is the one word which comes to any investor’s mind when s/he reads about the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) hearing on manipulations in bullion market by gold cartels.

So, the small and clean investors have been short-changed by big cartels during the past many years, especially during the recent boom time in bullion markets. Otherwise, how will you explain the biggest boom in paper gold (Exchange Traded Funds, ETFs) in the recent past with hardly any gold available in the market.

In fact, there is no gold left in this world if all the Gold ETFs ask for physical delivery. And, if that happens only god knows what will be the gold prices in the coming months — $10000 per ounce? Maybe, even more. Because, price of a commodity which is not available at all can go up to any level due to the sheer fact that it is not there in the market.

Now read about the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) hearing last week about a London whistle-blower who had explained to the CFTC how JP Morgan Chase has been manipulating/capping precious metal prices. In a shocking parallel to the inaction by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) after receiving warnings from Harry Markopolos about the Madoff ponzi, the CFTC has apparently been sitting on the information on gold cartels.

Did you visit the websites of GATA and CFTC this week? If you do, you can see a lot of articles and responses from investors who have been keenly watching the developments in bullion market.

The whistle-blower in this biggest gold fraud was Andrew Maguire, an experienced precious metal trader in London.  In an riveting interview (which is available on the internet all over the world) with GATA director, Adrian Douglas, Maguire describes a new dynamic impacting gold. The fact is that, there is a huge short position in the market.

The CFTC hearing confirmed what GATA has been saying all along, that the gold market is being manipulated. And, how? The gold cartel has accumulated a huge short position and the huge short positions are ‘naked’, which means these positions are not hedged. There is 100-times more paper-gold outstanding than physical gold. You must be saying Oh, My God! Then wait, there is more to it.

Sub-prime crisis was peanuts before this scam. The bullion market is now slowly taking in the impact of these revelations. The result is, there will be no gold in the market. Because, if people ask for physical delivery of gold for their ETFs, who will give all the gold. THERE IS NO GOLD! And the price of gold can be $5,000 per ounce, $10,000 or may be even more. Who can predict the value of a commodity which is not there is the market?

To add fuel to fire The Wall Street Journal wrote: “The objective of this manipulation is to conceal the mismanagement of the US dollar so that it might retain its function as the world’s reserve currency. But to suppress the price of gold is to disable the barometer of the international financial system so that all markets may be more easily manipulated. This manipulation has been a primary cause of the catastrophic excesses in the markets that now threaten the whole world.”

So, the gold cartel now has a big target. It is inevitable that the big traders and hedge funds will push the naked shorts to the wall by asking for physical metal. If there is a squeeze on the naked shorts, the sky is the limit for precious metal prices.

There have been reports that over the past 10 years, the gold cartel has staged a controlled retreat. It has been fighting the advancing gold price with propaganda, paper short sales and the occasional dishoarding of physical metal from central bank vaults and more recently, the IMF. This retreat is about to turn into a rout, which means the upside potential for the precious metals is huge.

The CFTC hearing came about in part because of long-term complaints from organizations such as the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee and individual analysts such as Ted Butler, Reg Howe, James Turk, Frank Veneroso and Adrian Douglas that the gold and silver commodity markets have been subject to blatant extensive price suppression manipulation by the US government and its trading partners.

In November 2009, Andrew Maguire, a former Goldman Sachs silver trader in that firm’s London office, had contacted the CFTC Enforcement Division to report the illegal manipulation of the silver market by traders at JPMorgan Chase. He described how the JPMorgan Chase silver traders bragged openly about their actions, including how they gave a signal to the market in advance so that other traders could make a profit during the price suppressions.

Maguire had a series of emails with Eliud Ramirez of the CFTC enforcement division explaining how the manipulations were tied to the Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly release of non-farm payroll figures and other recurring events.

In effect, the commissioners were told that almost all of the trading activities on the London exchange were merely settled by paper for paper, not for physical metals as the exchange supposedly requires. Further, the commissioners were told that it was impossible for the London exchange to ever deliver all the gold and silver owed to the owners of contracts.

Encouraging Words of the day:

Don't be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.

Talk of merging Thomas Edison State College, the NJ State Library, and the State Museum with Rutgers University.

After the proposed 74% cut in state support for libraries in New Jersey generated a groundswell of protest, and the result has been a 43% cut, a reduction of $6.1 million. This decidedly mixed result includes a halving of per capita state aid to libraries and the consolidation of four regional networks into one.

"We've lived to fight another day," Pat Tumulty, executive director of the New Jersey Library Association, told LJ. "This is a way of keeping our programs going."

"To All The Library Supporters Who Made Your Voices Heard, Thank you, you did it!" NJLA said on its advocacy site, Save MY NJ Library. "$4.299 Million was restored in the New Jersey Budget for library programs!"

The $4.3 million restored (out of the proposed $10.4 million cut) will support crucial services such as most databases, interlibrary loan, and the JerseyConnect Internet system. Nor will Thomas Edison State College, the distance learning institution that also houses the New Jersey State Library (NJSL), be merged with the New Jersey State Museum and governed by Rutgers University.

New federal funds
Crucially, sufficient money was restored—especially for JerseyConnect—for the State Library to get a $5.1 million federal broadband grant, supplemented by $1.5 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; add computers at 124 libraries; upgrade connectivity at 79 libraries; and provide job search assistance, employment skills, workforce development programs and other online resources at 365 libraries across New Jersey.

While the broadband grant does not replace state funds lost, it allows local libraries to improve connectivity, and positions the state library to work with consortium of New Jersey's community colleges to train library staff and job seekers. Also, residents will gain access to online content and training developed by New Jersey Network, the state public broadcasting network.

Taking some hits
However, the four regional library cooperatives, which have operated for 25 years, will be consolidated into one: INFOLINK. Discontinued are the JerseyClicks federated search and GALCO (Get a Library Card Online). Much technical assistance and training have been cut, as have pilot projects innovated by the State Library.

When the statewide delivery contract expires in December, there is a "possible loss of frequency," according to a presentation from State Librarian Norma Blake.

While the number of jobs losses is unclear, Blake indicated that the Library Development Bureau has eliminated two positions and the Law Library has eliminated one position in FY 2011.

Tumulty acknowledged that, while libraries were among the few programs that saw significant restoration during the legislative session, many were not starting as far in the hole.

"We're still fighting an uphill battle," she said, noting that state funding is relatively low. "Having said that, the programs we support through state funding are the programs that join our libraries together."

The 43% reduction, she agreed, was not in line with other programs, most of which took a 15-20% cut. The governor's office, she says, told library advocates that they started with programs deemed necessary and cut from library programs, which were seen as "discretionary."

"Fortunately," she said, "many of the public responded."

Whitney Houston in a recent interview talked about this growing trend of less talent, and more gimmick. Although she didn’t name any names, people believe her comments were directed at Lady GaGa. I think they’re aimed at Rihanna, too. You know something has to be ugly and dark for Whitney Houston to call it wrong.

                                   Food for thought

DIABETES IS A PANCREAS DISEASE. THE CONDITION EXISTS WHEN THE BODY HAS SUGAR (NATURAL FUEL FOR THE BODY) IN IT, BUT FAILS TO RECOGNIZE IT. SO, THE BODY URINATES OUT THE SUGAR. USUALLY, THE URINE WILL BECOME MORBID AND CHANGE IN ODOR AND COLOR. THE RESULT OF THIS IS WEIGHT LOSS, LOSS OF APPETITE, CONTINUOUS THIRST, AND AN OVERWORKED PANCREAS. THE PANCREAS SECRETES INSULIN, SUCH AS FRUCTOSE, MAY BE USED. HOWEVER, FRUCTOSE DAMAGES THE LIVER(FRUCTOSE IS USED QUITE OFTEN IN TODAYS FOOD).

DIABETES IS USUALLY CAUSED BY OVEREATING AND IS COMMONLY FOUND IN SO-CALLED AFFLUENT OR RICH COUNTRIES. IT IS CAUSED BY EATING REFINED CARBOHYDRATES (BLEACHED WHITE FLOUR AND REFINED SUGAR). ALSO, EATING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF ANIMAL FLESH AND ANIMAL FATS (FATS AND PROTEINS CHANGE TO SUGAR IN THE BODY) CAUSES DIABETES.

With 1 in 3 kids and teens in the United States being overweight the NFL is taking a new approach to fitness. The NFL and American Heart Association have partnered to create the NFL Play 60 Challenge, a program inspiring kids to get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day in school and at home. It’s the NFL’s goal to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle year-round.

The NFL Play 60 Challenge is an exciting and engaging curriculum for schools and classrooms to use to inspire exercise. In-classroom tracking materials and individual student guides are distributed for students to record their physical activity during the six-week program. The program encourages classrooms and students to experience exercise as something that can be done throughout the day in as many creative ways as possible. It requires 60 minutes of physical activity everyday (30 minutes in school/30 minutes outside of school).

Teams throughout the league are participating in the NFL Play 60 Challenge in their local communities. Lead by quarterback Trent Edwards, the Buffalo Bills recently kicked-off their local NFL Play 60 Challenge program for more than 2,000 Buffalo Public School elementary students.

“Staying physically active and staying physically fit is very important at a young age. We’re helping these kids realize that they need to be outside, be active and lead healthy and physical lives,” Edwards says.

All of the NFL’s teams participate in the NFL Play 60 Challenge. To discover how your school or classroom can participate in the NFL Play 60 Challenge and fight obesity visit NFL Play 60 Challenge.
